Promise Neighborhoods

The U.S. Department of Education launched the Promise Neighborhood grant program in 2010. Inspired by the Harlem's Children's Zone, the program seeks to improve the educational and developmental outcomes of children in the most distressed communities by building a continuum of academic programs and family and community supports. The program takes a place-based approach that focuses resources in targeted places. Four NNIP organizations are participating in Promise Neighborhood Initiatives awarded federal planning grants, and thirteen others were involved in applications or are currently working with Initiatives moving ahead without federally funding. Communities developing Promise Neighborhoods should visit our online guide for general NNIP resources relevant to their work.
