Mobilizing Data-Driven Local Outreach for the 2020 Census

Kathryn Pettit of the Urban Institute and Claire Ross from the US Census Bureau Partnership office presented a webinar to the Citi Community Progress Makers grantee organizations.

DescriptionIt may not seem like it, but Census 2020 is just around the corner!  The population counts from the decennial census are key to communities – they determine political representation and provide the foundation for statistics that determine the allocation of over $800 billion a year in federal spending.  The challenges for this Census are numerous, including the new option of Internet response, potential distrust in media, the political context, and the timing during a presidential campaign.   As embedded and trusted organizations, local community groups should actively participate in promoting Decennial Census jobs and organizing for full participation in the Census, particularly to reach groups that have been hard-to-count, such as people of color, immigrants, young children, and renters. This webinar will share background on the status of the Decennial Census, current resources available for communications, and ideas on groups can get involved.
