Bridging the Community Data Gap

Presentation by Amanda Macune

Kinder Institute for Urban Research   (Houston)

The Kinder Institute seeks to provide data and research services to facilitate the direct
practical use of data by community leaders to build capacity in Houston’s
disadvantaged neighborhoods. Over the past six years, we have partnered with ten
organizations in Houston on the Community Bridges Program, a unique experientiallearning
program where students learn about inequality and poverty issues through an
academic course and active fieldwork. The Community Bridges Fellows are placed in
partner organizations to develop and implement programs and projects based on
research findings to address the needs of the community. They also serve as liaisons
between the Kinder Institute and the partner organizations, connecting their work back
to ours as a local data intermediary.
