NNIP Executive Committee Elections - Voting Procedures

Last Updated: April 30, 2024

The NNIP Executive Committee is the central mechanism guiding NNIP's priorities, plans, and activities. Six representatives are elected from local NNIP partner organizations by the partnership and serve three-year terms on a rotating basis. Two representatives are elected annually each December and begin service in January.

NNIP partner staff self-nominate to run in the Executive Committee election and each partner city gets two votes in the election. In the case where there is more than one partner organization in a city, organizations collaborate to place one vote. This policy establishes voting procedures in order to avoid a potential tie between two candidates if the second and third place (or first, second, and third place) candidates receive the same number of votes.

Beginning with the 2024 election for the 2025-27 term, voting procedures for NNIP Executive Committee elections with more than two candidates will be as follows:

  • Each partner city will be asked to rank-order their two votes - that is they will vote for their first choice candidate and their second choice candidate.
  • As in previous years, the two candidates receiving the most total votes (either first or second choice) will win the election.
  • In the event of a tie between the candidates with the 2nd and 3rd most votes, the candidate with the most first place votes will win the second seat in the election.
  • In the event of a three-way tie between the candidates with the most votes then the two candidates with the most first place votes will win the two seats in the election.
  • In the event the above does not anticipate the resulting scenario, the current NNIP Executive Committee will vote to decide the winner. Committee members will not be constrained to support the candidate that their city voted for.
