Institute for Housing Studies   (Chicago)

The Institute for Housing Studies presents some of their ongoing work that examines the challenges facing the 2 to 4 unit rental stock in Chicago. These types of properties are a critical component of Chicago’s stock of “naturally occurring affordable rental housing”. However, IHS data show that 2 to 4 unit rental properties are being lost across the city at a rapid rate and this loss is contributing to the shrinking affordable rental housing supply citywide. IHS's recent work highlights the pressures driving the loss of this stock in different submarkets across the city and discusses opportunities for different types of targeted preservation strategies.
