Software Engineer

JOB DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITES:

The Polis Center at IUPUI is an applied research center of the Indiana University School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. Since it was founded in 1989, Polis has completed more than 500 projects in partnership with governmental agencies, community groups, businesses, not-for-profit organizations, schools, universities, and individuals, and is actively engaged in helping numerous initiatives benefit from the integrative capabilities of geographic information systems. The Software Engineer will support the following:

• Provide leadership under the general supervision of the Director of Information Systems Technology in requirement analysis, program design, coding, benchmark testing, debugging, and documentation. Work within a team environment to collaborate with and validate other software developers' work. Mentor and guide the application developers and junior team members.

• Work with internal and external clients to establish specifications for requested applications including functional, non functional, security, performance and maintenance requirements.

• Assess the costs and associated risks of new initiatives and use of varying tactics as part of a center-wide software development plan to ensure that Polis is meeting existing and anticipated client needs.

• Develop, and deliver high quality product documentation and courseware for Polis projects and those of its clients so that end-users can use the developed software tools competently.

• Stay current with emerging software technologies and trends in order to facilitate and improve the programming services Polis provides to its clients.

QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or software engineering. Master’s degree is a plus.  Candidate must have IT experience on multiple platforms/technologies working through majority of systems development life cycle phases and will be expected to work well with clients at multiple levels (leadership and non-leadership).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: 5+ years development experience with Microsoft .NET. 3+ years experience with OO analysis and design. Experience working with relational databases (Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL). Experience with SOA and web 2.0/3.0 technologies.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Experience with data modeling, Rich Internet Application development using Adobe Flex and Microsoft Silverlight, and programming for mobile devices. Knowledge in GIS programming using ESRI and open source GIS platforms will be an added advantage.
