The Piton Foundation and The Denver Foundation are seeking open-source developers to lead the technical implementation of two web‑based data and storytelling projects funded by the Knight Foundation Community Information Challenge:

The Colorado Data Commons (http://coloradodatacommons.org) brings thousands of sources of public information together in one central, digitally accessible location so people can find the information they need to drive community change.

The Citizen Atlas (http://storybase.org/) offers tools for creating and sharing data-driven stories. Communities will be able to create their own media‑rich, interactive data narratives, leveraging their stories for maximum impact.

We love bringing data to life and hope you do, too.

You’ll be a perfect fit if you can identify the right software tools, extend existing open-source code, and rapidly implement and iterate prototypes. We don’t yet have a preferred web-development framework, so whether you love Rails or Django or Drupal you’ll have an opportunity to convince us what we should use and why. These ideas are embedded in emerging development space with a great deal of energy and we want someone who is familiar with what’s already out there, especially in applying JavaScript and HTML5 to interactive data visualization.

You are drawn to this project because you are creative, innovative and want to work on something that has tangible, positive social impact. The project development environment will be agile and iterative with room to experiment in the beginning.

The Citizen Atlas will be a one-year contract and the Data Commons will be a six-month contract, although they are flexible. Rates are competitive. Both projects are based in Denver, but we’re open to developers who need to work remotely within the U.S. We are ready to start immediately.

If you’d like more information, we’re happy to share requirements documents for the projects. Please contact Matt Barry ([email protected] | 303.825.6246) to learn more.
