Positive-Sum Games: Using a Summer Internship Program to Catalyze Community Impact

Presentation by Noah Urban
October 2015

Data Driven Detroit (D3)   (Detroit)

In this presentation to the NNIP Membership meeting, Noah Urban described D3's 2015 inaugural summer internship program from its genesis through its conclusion in August, 2015.  The presentation began by noting several issues that had to be considered when setting up the program, which was framed as a career development and community benefit program. One of the major issues was funding, and that included stipends for the interns. Once funding was secured (with a grant from the Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Foundation), D3 sent out notices of the program; received numerous applications; and selected five highly qualified interns.  After describing the execution of the program, the presentation concluded with overviews of the interns' projects.
